Hello! I’m Justin
About Me
I’ve had a great many loves in my life, both in people and interests. I love stories in all their various forms: books, comic books, tv and film. I love games and find as much time as possible to pursue them in many different ways be it online or on the table top! I love people and their drives, their passions, their thoughts and views on the world, each new perspective that I am lucky enough to share in is a gift.
I suspect on reflection that it’s my interest in people that led me to wanting to help others and that journey began 10 years ago, at Youthspace. Youthspace is a text and online crisis line and, while I started as a volunteer offering supportive chats to anyone who wanted them, I knew from the day I first interviewed that I needed to work there; it took me a little less then a year to get hired. Since then, I’ve continued to talk to young adults and teens about everything under the sun, though as one can imagine with a crisis line, a great many of those conversation have centered around the topics of self injury and suicide. I couldn’t stop there though; I also became a part of the SEA program which would go to schools all over Vancouver Island and give workshops to grade 8’s and grade 10’s about how to how to talk about suicide with their peers. Rounding out my experience a bit I also spent four years working at the Specialized Youth Detox program in Victoria, where I worked with teens struggling with substance use addiction. This involved everything from helping them imagine what a substance-free life could look like to aiding in managing the symptoms of withdrawal they would often suffer during their stay.
These two experiences are what led me to seeking out and obtaining my Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Victoria as well as my Registered Social Worker designation through the BC College of Social Workers. I am keen to help support people with whatever they are going through, using empathy and non-judgement to lend a hand in nurturing the world I would like my daughter to grow up in.
My Philosophy
It is my sincerest belief that everyone deserves (and sometimes needs) non-judgmental support. In ten years of working at Youthspace I’ve seen time and again just how powerful it can be to give someone the space to be honest without fear that their honesty will be punished. As you can imagine this makes me a great fan of talk therapy in whatever form that may take, maybe it’s in an office, maybe it’s online, maybe it’s going for a walk. I’m fascinated by the success I’ve seen in play therapy and as I move forward in my career this will be an area I would love to explore further.
