Hello! I’m Sarah
About Me
For as long as I can remember I knew that I wanted to work with children and youth in some capacity. My passion for young people developed at an early age through being the eldest child in my family and through growing up with a home daycare in my home. I continued exploring this interest through studying psychology and development in my undergraduate degree, which led me to discover counselling as a profession which seemed like the perfect balance of my passions and interests.
When not working or completing school work, you can find me hanging out with my pup Koda, and my partner. We try to spend as much time outdoors as possible, exploring our beautiful island through walks on the beach, hikes, camping, and swimming, or at home reading, trying new recipes, or curled up for a cuddle with my pup. When younger, I had the pleasure and opportunity of living in three different provinces as well as living for a few years in both Europe and Australia, and doing so allows me to truly appreciate the beauty and opportunities of our island.
I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology and Criminology & Socio-Legal Studies at the University of Toronto in 2016. Wanting to further my education specifically with a younger population, I completed a certificate program in Child and Adolescent Mental Health at Northern College in 2017. Most recently, I have completed my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University, which included mentorship during my clinical internship by Charlotte King-Harris. I have also specific education in supporting clients and family members with trauma, addiction, interpersonal relationships, and am working towards certification in Synergetic Play Therapy.
In addition to my clinical internship, I have 1.5 years of experience working with adults as a crisis and single-session counsellor with two years of experience as an Intake Counsellor prior to this. I also spent time working in residential treatment for female youth and have also volunteered as a Crisis Text Responder with Kids Help Phone for over a year.
In addition to being a Registered Clinical Counsellor in BC I am also a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) in Ontario, which may be covered through some individual’s extended health coverage, even if you are located in BC.
My Philosophy
I fundamentally believe that there can never be too many supportive adults in a young person’s life. I aim to support you (or your child) in enhancing self-awareness and connection to both emotions and body while working towards the goals that make sense for you as a client. Every person is different and has a different experience, and my goal is to get to know your individual experience, help you feel validated and establish a relationship with you that becomes such a critical foundation for our therapeutic work together. I aim to support clients through providing you with the tools and the language to navigate life’s difficulties and challenges, and draw upon narrative therapy, mindfulness, cognitive behavioural therapy, and strength- and solution-based approaches, and also love incorporating art and play into sessions. I work with clients with many varying concerns, including anxiety and mood concerns, life changes/transitions, interpersonal relationship concerns, self-esteem, grief and loss, trauma, eating challenges, behavioural concerns, and more. I look forward to hearing from you and see if it is a good fit for us to work together.
