Hello! I’m Emma
About Me
Ever since I was a teenager, I knew I wanted to provide support for children, youth, and families in some capacity. As a young child I saw how even one helpful adult can make the difference for a child. I knew I wanted to be the person who helped keep a positive light in children and youth’s lives when things get tough. I began university planning to become a teacher but soon realized that as a social worker I would have more voice and power to protect and support children and youth. I completed my Bachelor of Social Work with a specialization in child welfare at the University of Victoria in 2011. Over my 10 years as a registered social worker, I have developed a passion for supporting children, youth, and families specifically through counselling. My primary focus has been working with children, youth, and families living with disabilities, mental health diagnoses, and other various challenges related to emotions, behaviors, and cognition. Now, I am completing my Master of Counselling Psychology with Athabasca University. I completed my practicum placement here with VICYFCS under the supervision of Charlotte King-Harris. I am continuing under Charlotte King-Harris’ supervision while I finish my master’s degree. Once completed I will become a Registered Clinical Counsellor. Simultaneously, I am completing Play Therapy certification and Trauma Informed Care certification. Look for these developments over the coming year and a half!
My experience extends to a number of environments, including government offices, daycares, shelters, detox facilities, and school classrooms. Beyond working with disabilities, mental health diagnoses, emotional regulation, and behavioral and cognitive challenges I have also completed training as a birth doula. My interest in supporting children and families goes beyond supporting children directly to also supporting parents through life transitions. In addition, I volunteer as a Cystic Fibrosis Advocate with
the Alberta chapter of Cystic Fibrosis Canada. I was born with Cystic Fibrosis myself and work hard to achieve the best and live life to the fullest. Likewise, I believe that no matter the challenges or diagnoses children, youth, and families are faced with, there is always a way to live your fullest life and I am committed to supporting you in achieving your goals.
